Asked about what his earliest memories were of the Champions League, he had no doubts: "It was Zizou's volley. It's the first thing that comes to mind. I remember us watching the Champions League all together when I was in the Youth Academy, the most exciting moments, cheering our teams on. Great memories."
Varane admitted that he "would never have imagined" that Real Madrid could possibly one day be knocking on his door when he was just a lad in Lens, and said that "it has all been thanks to Zizou and the manager (Mourinho)".
"Zizou was my first contact and after that the manager presented me with a really interesting project. He suggested we work together and he put his trust in me. What Mourinho always asks is that you do what you know how to do, but not to go over the top doing it. When you're young, you want to show your all and do it better, but sometimes you have to avoid getting yourself in a fix", he explained.
Among the reasons he gave for his fast development in the club, he underlined the importance of his team-mates and the trust that Mourinho has put in him: "That I have improved so quickly is a result of a combination of these things. Everything in my career so far has been very fast, and I´m ready to take the next steps, one by one, at the same fast pace".
