MADRID REGIONAL GOVERNMENT TO AWARD HIM THE 'MEDALLA DE ORO'

The Madrid Regional Government, at the suggestion of its president Ignacio González, has decided to award Iker Casillas the 'Medalla de Oro'. He is to be presented with the most prestigious title any Madrid citizen can be given on 2nd May, a local holiday in the region, with the ceremony to be held at the 'Real Casa de Correos'.
Casillas has been chosen to receive the award not only on account of his spectacular track record at Real Madrid and whilst playing for Spain, but also in recognition of the values he defends and for being a reference point for all Madrid's inhabitants.
Aside from his sporting achievements, the Madrid Regional Government would like to thank Casillas for his willingness to lend a hand at all manner of official events and to many a good cause in the local area.
The news comes at a difficult time for Iker in his sporting career and will compensate in part for the trials and tribulations the Capitan of Real Madrid is currently undergoing at the club.
Casillas is an avid collector of all kinds of trophies and awards. This new addition will add to the long list he has already managed to acquire during the course of his long and successful sports career.
His other achievements include the Prince of Asturias award for Sport (together with Xavi Hernández), a Gold Medal from the Royal Order of Sporting Merit, another Gold Medal awarded by Móstoles Town Hall, as well as being named Favourite Son of the latter and also that of nearby Navalacruz, to name a few. Furthermore, in 2012 a street was named after him in his home town of Móstoles, on the outskirts of Madrid.
