HAS ONLY WON ONCE IN 23 VISITS, AGAINST LEVERKUSEN

Though it is trips to Turkey that are usually described as 'hellish', in Real Madrid's case, it is visiting Germany that brings on nightmares. Whoever they face, 'Los Blancos' almost always end up scuttling back to Spain with their tail between their legs. Dortmund is no exception.
This week's Champions League semi-final marks Real's 24th visit to Germany. Of the previous 23, 'Los Blancos' have mustered just a solitary win, against Leverkusen in 2000, having failed in each of their first 13 attempts.
In total, Real Madrid has lost 17 times on German soil – including each of its last five trips –, drawing five times and winning once. Several of the losses have been thrashings. Munich, in particular, has proven impregnable for the Madrid giants: the 'Merengues' have lost 10 of 11 visits to the German capital, drawing just once.
No fewer than eight teams have frustrated Real Madrid in Germany. Besides usual suspects Bayern (11 times) and Dortmund (three times), the list includes Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach (twice apiece), plus Hamburg, Kaiserslautern, Cologne and Werder Bremen (all once).
