Against Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid found itself tantalisingly close to reaching the Champions League final yet again. Just one more goal would have done the job for 'Los Blancos', who instead crashed out at the second-to-last stage, just like against Bayern last season and Barça the year before.
José Mourinho has put Real back in the European limelight, but has failed to progress beyond the semi-finals. In so doing, he has emulated the club's run in the late 80s, when Leo Beenhakker's side fell in three straight semi-finals from 1987 to 1989.
